Centaurium is well known to herbalists as a ‘stomach bitter’ – one of the classes of herbs with bitter taste and used to aid digestion. For these herbs, it is important to taste the bitterness – and because of this, it is better to use herbs such as Centaurium as a tincture taken 5 minutes before meals.
What is Centaurium?
Centaurium umbellatum, used in our Centaurium tincture, is a small plant with purple flowers. It may be found in many parts of the world but especially in Middle Europe and Asia. The classification of the group of plants known as Centaurium is still in discussion and because of this, Centaurium umbellatum is sometimes also referred to asCentaurium erythrea.
It is said that the group of plants named Centaurium derived its name from the centaur Chiron, well known in Greek mythology for his skills as a herbalist.
How it works
Centaurium works by increasing digestive enzymes and gut movement. This enhances the breakdown of food, relieving symptoms of indigestion, flatulence, acid reflux, the feeling of fullness and gastric discomfort.
This herb can also help to improve the appetite. This may be beneficial to those with anorexia. This can also act on balancing out the appetite for those with compulsive eating disorders or over eating.
